What is Web2.0 and why is it important

from:

The new century is all about speed and fast connections. Change is everywhere and sometimes, many people find it hard to react to all the switches. This doesn’t mean there is no way to deal with the situation.

We have to find a way to solve this problem. If the world is changing, we need to change along with it. Flexibility is the key to adjust to the new environment and there is no time to complain about it. Let’s get past the complication with the technical side of the evolution and try to make things simple for us. A term that introduces us to this simplified world is ‘Web2.0’.The term became very popular in 2004, after the ‘O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 Conference’. This expression means a proliferation of interconnectivity and interactivity of the web-delivered content. ‘Web2.0’ mainly describes the changing trend in the use of World Wide Web technology. The new vision is to enhance communication, creativity, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web. The ‘Web2.0’ was the starting point of web culture communities and also to the services like social networking sites and video sharing sites and has allowed users to do more than information exchange. It has allowed people to interact to one another and use software application to become closer and also retrieve information by using a browser. In this way, users own the data on ‘Web2.0’ site and exercise control over that. A part of the reasons why ‘Web2.0’ is so important is:

Search: - retrieving information is now a fast and simple process because we use keyword search, a very user friendly method.

Authoring: - data uploaded is own by the user and can be updated constantly. On some search sites the content can be modified by many people and one person can do other’s work. In blogs, the content can be easily updated and forms the whole content along with all the comments.

Links: - on the new platform, ‘Web2.0’, you find guidance to important pieces of information. Using links can help you retrieve information about what you are searching for.

Tags:- creating tags in a simple way and often one word descriptions, facilitates searching and it is one more reason why ‘Web2.0’ is very popular.

Extensions: - this means the automation of some of the work and pattern matching by using different algorithms. An example is amazon.com recommendations

Signals: - when someone uses RSS (Really Simple Syndication), the other people interested in his data receive a notification through e-mail.

Nowadays, even universities are use the Web2.0 platform so that they can enhance their connectivity.
