Freelancing, how does it work?

The Freelancing Business
If you want to do freelance work, the basics are the same every time, even if you're doing photography, build sites, develop software, write articles or design. When you do freelancing, a thick skin is something that is a must. Since you need to look for work on a daily basis, you will be rejected by people a lot, so you shouldn't take it personally. In most cases, offline and online freelancers work pretty much the same way, except you don't get a form rejection slip. However, when you do it online, you don't get any news in return in most cases.
If you freelance on the Internet there are some advantages. One of the advantages is that the pace is much faster than it is in the real world. While going offline means that you might spend weeks before you get a paying job, online you can find work the same day you start looking. You also get the money for the jobs you do much faster. However, there are downsides to online freelancing, since instead of competing with a few people from the same town you go against thousands of people from all over the world.
Your Portfolio
A simple website can hold all your work in one place, showcasing it to potential customers. Offline you would have to carry a map with you to show what you can do to the clients. Even if you don't have your own site, you got a very good chance of finding work online. Still, you should have plans to create your own portfolio site once things get more serious and you start earning enough money.
Affiliate Marketing and Freelancing
A lot of people that do freelancing online also do affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing consists of earning money from commissions received on products that other people make and you sell. Plenty of people that do freelance writing for example, will also do affiliate marketing to earn more money. You can earn quite a bit of extra money by doing this, but you need to be careful with the products and companies that you promote. It would be a good thing if you could promote only things you were actually interested in and you would buy them for yourself. Even better if you actually own them and you know how well they work.
Private Clients
A part of the freelancers like to work with private clients. To find jobs with them they will send resumes, answer to online ads and so on. You can find a lot of companies and people that look for freelancers on the Internet. If you're a freelancer and you do great work on a regular basis, finding clients shouldn't be a problem. You should avoid paying people to bring you work though. Since there are so many jobs to do online you don't need to pay other people to do it for you. In many cases you will also stumble upon ads that are fake or try to scam you. In time you will learn how to spot the fake ads and avoid losing time and money on them. Try talking with other people that also do freelance jobs, and that might help you get extra jobs from time to time.
